Everyone thinks that smoking hurts and harms your health; however, almost no one remembers that every situation, the same as a coin, has two sides. Unfortunately, people always stick to the idea, that whoever smokes gets a lung cancer; whereas, we see a lot of old people who smoke for a long time and many of them didn’t get it. Almost no one wants to change their opinion about smoking just because they are stubborn or they depend on others' opinion. However, I want to gladden smokers and disappoint people who truly believe that smoking harms your health because of the fact that smoking has its own health benefits. I will now prove that smoking is viewed wrongly by society.
Many people believe that second-hand smokers can get negative effects from breathing the cigarette smoke. However, John Roud conducted an experiment on second-hand smoking and proved the reverse. In 1989, John Roud, a chemist, non-smoker and a father of two children, conducted an experiment on second hand smoking. He was conducting this experiment in Texas University, far from social areas. He asked several smokers to smoke and blow the smoke in to a tiny room. He wanted to measure the quantity of all 400 chemicals, which are in cigarette, such as tar, nicotine, burned chocolate, etc.; in order, to figure out how much of these toxic chemicals, a non-smoker gets by breathing near a smoker. For 15 years he was making this experiment and at the end of his scientific experiment he got the answer for his question. A non-smoker would have to stay in this tiny room, with a different smoker standing on every square meter of the room, for 100 hours in order to get as much of nicotine as there is in one cigarette.
Another thing that I want to discuss is the discrimination of smokers. What does it mean? Non-smoking people complain that they don’t want to breathe smoke not only because of health reasons but also because it is a non-pleasant smell. What if for smokers a certain smell of perfume is unpleasant, should they also complain? If both sides will complain it will lead to an enormous conflict between smokers and non-smokers; consequently, government will intervene in this conflict, which will lead to even larger conflict. Therefore, smokers and non-smokers should find a compromise. Or what about other harmful smoke, which is released by factories, cars, etc. People don’t pay attention to these harmful gases, because most of them have benefits from these things. Some people open factories in order to earn money, some get 5 cars per family for their own comfort, but hardly any of them complain about these things, which release millions of hazardous gases. Besides, let me remind you that factories pollute not only air but soil and water as well. The statics that were made by The American Lung Association states, that 30,000 people died in 1998 as a result of the car emissions (Hanes, 2008).
By writing this blog I don’t want to convince non-smokers to start smoking; I just want to show reader that smoking has its own benefits. Every person should have self-control, in order to stop himself whenever he feels that he has smoked a lot.
